Dear Cub Scout Leader:

Merry Christmas to everyone!!! I’m sure you are all enjoying these most special days of the year, hectic and crazy as they may be!!!

Congratulations to Nikki Merriott and Pack 614 for a super Bowling Day event. Seventy-eight (!!!) Cub Scouts from all over the district enjoyed an afternoon of uninterrupted bowling and good clean fun!!!! Thanks to Nikki for a well-organized event!!! And speaking of Pack 614, they deserve another pat on the back for winning second place in the Athens Christmas Parade!! Way to go!!!

I hope you haven’t forgotten that December is Good Turn Month. Please remember that each pack is asked to do a good turn of some kind in their community as a sort of Christmas gift to the community. By doing this, the boys will earn the good feeling of helping others, as well as the respect of our community. Be proud to be a Scout, and convey that to your boys!! Don’t forget to call about media coverage for your activities.

It's that time of year again! All recharters are due to the Council by the end of January. If you need additional help completing your recharter please contact Chris Agee (chris.agee@scouting.org) or Robert Randolph (robert.randolph1@gmail.com). Some words of advice: If there are any Webelos ready for crossover in your Pack, please be sure that they end up on a Unit roster. Either recharter them with the Pack and transfer them into a Troop in the spring, or drop them at recharter and BE CERTAIN they recharter with their new Troop!

Our January district event will be CUB SCOUT LOCK-IN, set for Friday, January 25th, from 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., at the Athens YMCA. This will be an evening planned by all packs. If you have not informed me of the activity your Pack will provide that evening, please get in touch with me right away so I can come up with a schedule of all activities. The boys will need to bring their own basketballs clearly labeled with their names (we already know what a popular activity that is!!). The price for the event will be $10 per Scout and $6 per adult, which will include use of the Y, pizza and drinks, all activities, and the lock-in segment. Deadline for payment will be Friday, January 18th. We’ll have more details and be able to discuss this more at our January Roundtable. Please encourage everyone’s participation in this super fun event--let's hope for a large crowd and lots of great activities for that crowd to participate in!!!

I need to let you know:

- that our popcorn sale is now officially over! Please don't forget that all Popcorn monies are due to the Council by 5pm on Friday, December 14th (tomorrow!); after that date, your commission drops by 10%. The Unaka District was incredibly successful in Popcorn sales this year with over $58,000 sold! That's over $17,000 straight into the Units accounts! Thanks to all units who sold popcorn this year! Please be sure to thank our District Popcorn Chair Brandi Jones of Pack 615 for her continued dedication to our District's Popcorn sale. In the four years that she has lead this effort, the Unaka District has increased sales EACH YEAR! Way to go Brandi!!!

--that there will be a Webelos Pin Day on January 5 in conjunction with the Athens Merit Badge College at Mars Hill Presbyterian Church. You need to register your Webelos NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 15th if they are interested in working on the Scientist pin. (the Aquanaut pin is not being offered due to lack of interest). This should be a great day for Webelos participating in the first ever Unaka Pin Day!!! The event starts that day with registration between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., and ends about 3:00 p.m. Cost for the day is $12 for our Unaka Webelos, and includes lunch and a patch………

--that our next Roundtable will be Thursday, January 10th at 7:00 p.m. at Mars Hill Presbyterian Church. Final plans for our Lock-In will be discussed, as well as plans for our District Eagle Scout and Volunteer Recognition Banquet.

--that Boy Scout Night at the UT Men’s Basketball game vs. Mississippi State is scheduled for Saturday, January 19th, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. All tickets will be $8.50 per person, and must be purchased at least 2 days before the game. The game will be played at the Thompson-Boling Arena. Please go to UTTIX.com, click on “VOLS TIX” at the top of the page, then on “group ticket window”, enter the username “scoutball” and password “basketball” and complete your order. Or, you can call Ashley Fincher at 865-974-9659 or Ashley.fincher@utk.edu. Please note that there is a $1.50 processing fee online. All Scouts attending should wear their Scout shirts.

--that our local Eagle Scout and Volunteer Recognition Banquet will be Thursday, February 7th at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church starting at 6:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s awards banquet will be “STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER!”. I will be asking each pack’s Cub Scouts to do their usual wonderful job of making placemats and wall decorations, and hope they will try to show off for the adults and Scouts present!! We’ll talk a lot about this at the next few Roundtables. Please encourage your boys to be as creative and colorful as possible with these original pieces of art!! Please don’t forget the theme and try to use it in a Cub Scout way. Everyone looks forward to seeing what our Cubs can come up with!!!!

Also, this is the night of the presentation of the District Award of Merit, the highest award given at the district level. Past recipients of this award determine the winners. Please call me if you have any questions about this award!

In addition to the prestigious awards listed above, this is a night for many leaders to also receive their deserved recognition for various duties and trainings completed. Phil Seibert, our training chairman, must have your information about training awards that have been earned no later than January 15th. Please look up the necessary paperwork on our website and get it to Phil as soon as possible!!!

--that “Scouting for Food” dates are set for Saturdays February 2nd and 9th. This is a very worthwhile activity for all Scouts, as they collect canned food items for local food pantries. More details will come at each Roundtable.

--that Scout Sunday is set for Sunday, February 10th. This is a day to have the boys in your pack or den recognized in church, in uniform, usually sitting in a group. Individual churches handle this day differently; you can make it as special as you want, just contact your pastor early.

--that we do not have a district event in February so that all packs can participate in the national service project Scouting for Food Drive, Scout Sunday, and their own Blue and Gold Banquet. February is a very busy month for Scouts!

--that this year’s Knoxville Ice Bears Scout Night is set for Friday, February 2nd at 7:30 p.m.; this is also Star Wars Night, so you need to register early if you plan to attend. Please contact the council for further information.

--that Boy Scout Awards Day at Dixie Stampede is set for Saturday, February 26, 2013, at the 3:30 p.m. show; there are activities from ticket pick-up time of 1:00 p.m. until the actual show at 3:30. Special price tickets that day are $26.48 per person, which includes their fabulous one-of-a-kind show, a 4 course meal, the tax and gratuity. Please contact Denise Miller at 1-800-356-1676, ext. 3121 or denisem@dixiestampede.com at least one week prior to the event, and be sure and mention “Boy Scout Awards Day” for this special pricing. Denise says there is also a 10% discount for the gift shop; souvenir boot mugs are $4.00 at the door--$3.50 in advance.  Please also know that you can have this special group rate at any time if you work through Denise.

--that it’s not too early to start thinking about the University of Scouting, scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd at Crown College in Powell, TN from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.! The University of Scouting is a fun learning experience, and the largest supplemental training course offered by the Great Smoky Mountain Council for Scouting volunteers at all levels. Courses will be offered for all Scout leaders from Tigers to Venture Crews to help broaden understanding and knowledge of the Scouting program; you decide which courses to attend in the college (s) of your choice. Over 30 courses will be offered, from “Basic Outdoor Cooking” to “Games Cub Scouts Play” and all in-between and beyond. You can choose up to 6 exciting classes! Registration is going on NOW. Super Early Bird registration is $15 and ends January 11th.

--that our District Pinewood Derby will be Saturday, March 9th, at the Calhoun school gymnasium. Weigh-in and registration begins at 1:00 – 1:45 p.m., with the derby set to begin around 2:00, and awards to be presented at about 5:00. Please try to schedule your pack’s derby before this date to encourage more participation at the district level. Pack 616 is in charge of the derby, so we can all look forward to another well-organized event!! The rules packet is on the web site at: www.unakascouts.com/2013UnakaDerbyRules.pdf

--that there are three special events in April!!! First will be a BIKE RODEO sponsored by the local Optimist Club, set for Saturday April 6th. Details will come later, but we want to support one of the great supporters of youth in our area! Second will be our DISTRICT CROSS-OVER CEREMONY for Webelos crossing over into Boy Scouts, set for Saturday, April 13th in Calhoun. The other event will be our bi-annual SPRING FAMILY CAMPOREE , scheduled for the weekend of April 26th – 28th, and led by a pack TBA. More details will follow………………..

--that our summer Cub Scout camp’s dates and theme are set. Our twilight camp will be June 24th – 28th at the Mayfield Farm & Nursery in Athens with our own Christy Seibert wearing the director’s cap again. The theme this year is “TENNESSEE PIONEERING”. SAVE THESE DATES AND BE THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU CAN HELP!!!
